About Us

Welcome to Dance Magic Academy
Academy Principal Jodie Spicer, has been a qualified dance teacher for over 27 years and as a mother of 3, understands the importance of introducing children to a variety of artistic, creative and physical experiences. Jodie believes children are the most precious and important individuals in our lives, which is why she strives to ensure every student enrolled at the Academy receives the very best dance training.

Jodie Spicer - Principal and Academy Director
F.A.T.D. Diploma, A.R.A.D. Solo Seal, St John Ambulance Senior First Aid
Jodie Spicer teaches all styles of theatrical dance from Classical Ballet, Modern Expressive, Lyrical Contemporary and National Character through to Tap, Jazz, Hip Hop and her specially created Funky Jazz and Movement & Music classes.

Jodie commenced dancing as a young child attending Ballet classes, shortly followed by Tap, Modern, Jazz and National Character. Annual exams and concerts were a highlight, but as she also thrived on performing for audiences, she began to participate in eisteddfods and public performances throughout NSW.
After completing the highest level in RAD Classical Ballet, and Teacher Exams for Tap and Modern/Jazz in F.A.T.D., Jodie accepted a scholarship to attend the VCA (Victorian College of Arts) School of Dance and undertook a Bachelor of Dance.

Jodie continues to update her studies and qualifications, attending dance Workshops and Seminars and has recently completed a Diploma in Anatomy for Dance.  Her love for choreography and passion for dance has allowed Jodie to create solo and group routines for concerts, eisteddfods and public performances for students of all levels from beginners to semi-professionals.  Students have the opportunity to do something special with their lives and achieve their dreams. Dancing is an expression of sheer joy, combining charm, artistry and grace that fulfils its magical purpose.

Parents
Parents have their own waiting area and are able to view classes through the glass partition into both studios, however, in the case of Movement & Music classes parents are often encouraged to participate with their children. Seating is provided in the waiting room and an enclosed outdoor play area is available for siblings (under parental supervision).

Newsletters
Students and parents will receive a Newsletter every term highlighting general notices, special events, exam information and eisteddfod achievements. Newsletters are available in electronic format (PDF), it's as easy as supplying your email address, however limited hard copies will still be available at the studio.

Newsletters can also be downloaded directly from the 'Members' page of this website. Secure Login Details are required, available to current students and parents only.

Never miss out on a Newsletter and important information again. Don't put up with finding a crumpled bit of paper 6 months old in the bottom of your child's dance bag.

Concerts, Community Performances & State Awards
An annual concert will take place at the end of each year. The students really love learning routines and performing together, allowing them to display their talents and personalities in a variety of dance styles. These performances give parents, relatives and friends the opportunity to see what the students have achieved throughout the year. Please Note: It is not compulsory for students to participate in the concert but it is such an exciting culmination for all their hard work and success.

In addition to the annual concert, students are also invited to perform regularly at local community and public events. This is an opportunity for many of the students at Dance Magic Academy to have their moment in the spotlight and dance their hearts out.

The F.A.T.D. holds an annual state level competition, the F.A.T.D. Awards, and every 3 years the prestigious International South Pacific Championships. Selected students are asked to represent Dance Magic Academy displaying their talents and skills in their Grade Syllabus work. The competition is always of the highest standard and our students have the chance to extend themselves and further their love of dance and life. Students have achieved outstanding results with several making it to the finals and a few top students coming away with 1st and other excellent placings.

Costumes
A very big part of the concert experience is the stunning costumes that all performers get to wear. At Dance Magic Academy we hire out some of the costumes and source high quality best value garments to help keep costume fees as low as possible. Some costumes will remain the property of Dance Magic Academy but most other costumes will remain your own to keep. Costumes average @ $40 per routine or less in most instances.

 Uniform Guide:-GroupUniformSml.jpg - large

Movement & Music Classes
There is no compulsory uniform for these classes. In fact many students wear their favourite fairy, princess, ballet, super hero or character outfits and I encourage them to do so. If you can't get all dressed up to go to dancing then when can you? However, most of the students do prefer to wear the uniform that the older students wear.  One thing I do insist upon is proper dance shoes. For the short term runners or other flexible soled shoes are fine, but please do not waste money purchasing 'Jiffies'. 'Jiffies' have slippery soles, flick off the student's feet and can cause them to trip, plus they are made of vinyl and do not allow the feet to breathe. For only a few extra dollars, Canvas or Leather Ballet Shoes can be bought which have been specially designed for dance and are available from size 7.
